Dog Days of Summer

I've been in Vermont for about 2 weeks now, but I just realized that I still have pictures from my time in Michigan to post. Just some random pictures without much rhyme or reason behind it, but hey, I might as well do it eventually!

Home for the Last Time

  The theme of my life for the past year or so has been my long, slow move from the Philippines back to the US. It started because of a change in my employment that forced me to be based out of Washington DC, and it was as extended as it was because Nikki still, somehow, doesn't have a visa so that she can join me. Just one of the many, many joys of interacting with the American immigration system. That whole process seems to be finally (finally!) drawing to a close, but the long wait meant that I decided to do one more visit home to Sorsogon this spring to spend some time with Nikki, and help move yet more things from the Philippines to the US. Conveniently I timed my visit for the absolute hottest part of the year- in an El Niño year at that, when the Philippines has been breaking all-time temperature records left and right. Sky Islands and Red Rocks

  After finishing our camping expedition in the Chiris with the Birding Co-op, most of our camping buddies headed to Tucson for the Southeast Arizona Birding Festival . Nikki and I, however, had a different route: we needed to the head to the nearest center of population to get the tire patched on our lemon of a rental car. Thankfully our birding companion Corey had already dealt with flat tires in the Chiris before, and he pointed us to a Ford dealership in the town of Lordsburg just across the state border in New Mexico. That place proved to be cheap and efficient, and it was only $25 to get our tire patched up before we were ready to go. I still would have rather spared myself the extra 2 hours of driving, and that was sadly only the first of several rental car issues we were to deal with on our Arizona trip.  Back in Tucson, we were sharing an AirBnb with most of the other Co-op folks. Big Day Mega Bird

  Among my birder peers, I'm a little unusual in that I've been a dedicated user of eBird practically since my first days of birding. That's partly because I started embarrassingly late in life, but discovering eBird was also one of the things that got me properly into birding as a serious hobby. It's mostly about enjoying being in the presence of birds and trying for good looks and pictures, but there's something about tracking my life list (and country list and province list and county list and year list) that my lizard brain finds deeply satisfying.
