My 2019 5MR

The 2019 5MR Challenge is a wonderful and dangerous idea thought up by Jen Sanford, one of my favorite bird bloggers, to try and see as many birds as possible within a 5-mile radius of one's house. I needed a good excuse to get better at exploring my area in DC rather than moping around and regretting the lack of good endemics (the Philippines spoiled me), so I decided to join on, which has made this year... interesting.

My 5MR: All of Arlington County and East Falls Church county, plus about half of Alexandria County, a third of Washington DC, and bits of Prince George's County, Maryland and Fairfax County, Virginia. Phew!

Following my summer abroad, I moved slightly, meaning that my 5MR has also moved somewhat. This has the benefit of adding some very good birding spots, specifically Rock Creek Park and Lower Senate Park, while not actually removing anything from my list, since I never really birded on the northwestern end of my 5MR anyway. I also got to retroactively add some species to my list, which was appreciated. My new circle is below:

The new 5MR, with some very nice spots added and nothing of value removed.

Key:

• Birds are listed in order of appearance
• New birds for my 5MR (that I didn't see before 2019) are in bold.
• Lifers for me are underlined.
• Birds rare enough to set off an alert on eBird are listed with an exclamation point (!)
