Sun, Sky, Water

Add "sand" to the title, and you basically have what makes Leelanau County so beautiful (although some would argue "cherries" should added somewhere in the mix). But these three are what I've been focusing on lately with my photography, hence the title. "Sand" may play a bigger part in my next update, but that's neither here nor there. What I've put up here are just a few photos from various picture outings and my attempts to escape the midday heat. Having such a late sunset is nice when you work until 8 everyday, although it's not late enough many days, unless I feel like skipping dinner. And I never, ever feel like skipping dinner. I've still done some late-evening rushes through county roads, realizing I'm almost too late to catch the sunset, and hoping nobody is monitoring my road speed. 




Many of these photos are somewhat similar in their composition (vertical), color scheme, and  subject matter (see above title). This is partly because I have a particular style, and partly because I've been trying to focus on certain elements more than others recently. Hope everyone enjoys!

  One of the joys of living in a woefully under-birded country like the Philippines is the unparalleled opportunity for exploration. I've spent countless hours scrolling through the satellite view on Google Maps looking for patches of undisturbed forest, or better yet newly-constructed roads that make that forest accessible. I've even been able to visit many of them, and more often than not they've turned out to be excellent birding sites- among them SNA , San Remigio , and the Solsona-Apayao road . Costa Rica Intro

  Earlier this February, something unheard of happened: I actually got caught up on blogging, posting about my pelagic trip just a week after the birding actually happened. I found myself without any backlog of photos to edit or posts to write, for the first time since I resurrected this blog back in 2022. For a solid couple of days, I had no idea what to do with myself. Well, I can now happily report that that is no longer the case, as I just returned from possibly the best birding trip I've ever done: an epic 8-day circuit of Costa Rica.  This all started sometime last year, when my good birding friend Josh Covill mentioned that he was heading to Costa Rica in February with Tom Forwood and Hilary Turner. I initially wasn't sure if I could commit considering how frequently my travel plans change, but by January it became clear that I (unfortunately) wasn't going to be heading back to Asia anytime soon. Antique Adventures

  After my epic trip up Ciremai at the end of June, I returned to Jakarta for a few more days of work, then flew onwards to the Philippines. I had some work in Manila and then a few weeks to telework from back home in Sorsogon, but June 28 was a holiday in the Philippines, and Nikki and I weren't about to let that go to waste. I was still nursing a bruised tailbone from my Ciremai trip but nonetheless we planned a 4-day trip to Panay so that we could once again explore the San Remigio area and a little farther afield. Joining us were Cheta, Olympus and Angel, all of whom had some remaining targets in Antique- especially Angel who had never been before. I of course had been to San Remigio already twice before- once when I "discovered" it as a birding spot , and once more with Nikki, Cheta, Larry and Pete last year when we checked out more sites there.
