I Love Storms

Just a short post this time.


There was a nice big band of intense thunderstorms rolling through Michigan last night, which usually just serves to make me feel better about staying inside. However, I was bored, so I did what any sane person would do, and got out my camera.



Now, driving out to a field and standing in the rain with a metal tripod and camera during a lightning storm is extremely dangerous, and should not be attempted by mere laymen. Fortunately, I'm no layman, I'm an amateur photographer, so out I went. This was my very first time photographing lightning, so it was a pretty steep learning curve (first lesson: policemen find it kind of strange when you're standing by the side of the road with lightning crashing all around you). I only caught the tail end of the storm, and only came out with a few keepers, but it was still a lot of fun. Now when's the next lightning storm?

  After finishing our camping expedition in the Chiris with the Birding Co-op, most of our camping buddies headed to Tucson for the Southeast Arizona Birding Festival . Nikki and I, however, had a different route: we needed to the head to the nearest center of population to get the tire patched on our lemon of a rental car. Thankfully our birding companion Corey had already dealt with flat tires in the Chiris before, and he pointed us to a Ford dealership in the town of Lordsburg just across the state border in New Mexico. That place proved to be cheap and efficient, and it was only $25 to get our tire patched up before we were ready to go. Turns out El Nido has good birds too

  After the whirlwind week of our wedding , we had the chance to do some traveling with our families who had come for the wedding, including Nikki's sister, my parents, sister, uncles Rusty and Kevin, and friend Clayton coming all the way from the US. These weren't the only people who traveled a long way–in fact our wedding involved a fair amount of travel for nearly all the guests–but they were the ones we traveled with. This was actually the second time in the Philippines for most of my family- my parents and sister had visited me in Sorsogon way back in the day when I first got here (Morgan ended up getting caught in a massive typhoon on her visit), and Kevin had come in 2017 for a mega birding trip through the country. However, we wanted to make sure they got to see more than just Sorsogon for this visit, as lovely as Sorsogon is. (Stranded on) Country Roads

  This spring shaped up to be a very busy one, and as I was on my trip to North Carolina I found out that I was being sent back to Asia for a work trip in early June. I had barely been back from the Philippines for a few weeks but it was apparently time to head out once again. That still left Memorial Day weekend, however, and exhausting travel aside I still wasn't going to let a three-day weekend go to waste.  Thankfully, one advantage of being plugged into the birding network means that weekends are difficult to waste, especially in spring. Mollee, who I'd already been on birding adventures with in various places , invited me to come out to her home state of West Virginia for a weekend of birding, herping, and general naturalist things. I asked my usual DC birding crew if they were interested in joining, and unsurprisingly all of them were.
