Announcement: Trip reports now being posted

Even though I do a fair amount of DIY birding travel, I've avoided making proper trip reports, mostly because my travel is generally broken up into short weekend trips when I can take the time off of work, rather than "proper" multi-week expeditions of the sort that usually get reports. Still, I've been to enough new or under-birded spots in the Philippines that I figure it's worth providing some more details for other birders wishing to visit. This is perhaps especially the case as many of the best-known birding reports from the country are well out-of-date by now, and international birders are starting to trickle back into the country.

My trip reports are now in the creatively-named "Trip Reports" page of this blog, which is located at the very top of my home page. So far I only have reports from my recent trips to Panay and Samar, but if I have time I hope to fill in some more from older trips as well. If there are any details that would be helpful to include in reports, or specific locations I should add, let me know over Facebook or in the comments here!

  One of the joys of living in a woefully under-birded country like the Philippines is the unparalleled opportunity for exploration. I've spent countless hours scrolling through the satellite view on Google Maps looking for patches of undisturbed forest, or better yet newly-constructed roads that make that forest accessible. I've even been able to visit many of them, and more often than not they've turned out to be excellent birding sites- among them SNA , San Remigio , and the Solsona-Apayao road . Costa Rica Intro

  Earlier this February, something unheard of happened: I actually got caught up on blogging, posting about my pelagic trip just a week after the birding actually happened. I found myself without any backlog of photos to edit or posts to write, for the first time since I resurrected this blog back in 2022. For a solid couple of days, I had no idea what to do with myself. Well, I can now happily report that that is no longer the case, as I just returned from possibly the best birding trip I've ever done: an epic 8-day circuit of Costa Rica.  This all started sometime last year, when my good birding friend Josh Covill mentioned that he was heading to Costa Rica in February with Tom Forwood and Hilary Turner. Antique Adventures

  After my epic trip up Ciremai at the end of June, I returned to Jakarta for a few more days of work, then flew onwards to the Philippines. I had some work in Manila and then a few weeks to telework from back home in Sorsogon, but June 28 was a holiday in the Philippines, and Nikki and I weren't about to let that go to waste. I was still nursing a bruised tailbone from my Ciremai trip but nonetheless we planned a 4-day trip to Panay so that we could once again explore the San Remigio area and a little farther afield. Joining us were Cheta, Olympus and Angel, all of whom had some remaining targets in Antique- especially Angel who had never been before. I of course had been to San Remigio already twice before- once when I "discovered" it as a birding spot , and once more with Nikki, Cheta, Larry and Pete last year when we checked out more sites there.
